This is Fairhope, a beautiful little village on Mobile Bay. The town was founded by a group of followers of the single- tax philosophy of Henry George, who believed that the only tax should be upon the land - not upon man's efforts - and that the "land is the source of all wealth." They came from Iowa and felt that this area across the bay from Mobile offered a "fair hope" of succeeding as a colony. Today, Fairhope is one of the few surviving single-tax colonies in the world. The majority of the downtown business district and a great deal of the bayfront area is owned by the colony for the use and benefit of the citizens of Fairhope.
Fairhope has sailing, fishing, water sports, polo, jubilees, golf, horses, beaches, Mardi Gras, festivals, shopping and much more. Come visit us! For more info, click HERE. |
