This is my hometown of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Halfway between New Orleans and Memphis on the Mississippi River, it is a city steeped in history and Old South charm. Look around. The Vicksburg National Military Park is one of the most important parts of the city. This is where, in 1863, the Union forces of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman laid siege to the city and forced the surrender of the Confederate army, led by John C. Pemberton. I worked in the Park as a seasonal historian during college summers.
Vicksburg is also home to antebellum homes and the mighty Mississippi River:
